Singers audition for the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Chorus to perform in Turandot.

Audition Dates: January 17, 24, & 31, 2018

Location:  44 Armory Street in Englewood, New Jersey

Audition Requirements

Male singers, representing all vocal ranges and ages, are especially needed. Adult applicants should have a rudimentary working ability to read music and experience singing. Previous stage experience and foreign language study are desirable, but are not a necessity. Teenagers, ages 17 to 19, who have some vocal experience singing may also apply.  Prior experience includes performing with a school, choir, or another performing group or organization.

The audition consists of singing five note scales. In particular, the audition process assesses and determines each singer’s range and vocal category. Also, applicants may bring a short song to perform at the audition.  In addition, a completed application is submitted to Chorus Coordinator Mary Ellen Rohon.  Singers invited to join the chorus pay a nominal fee of $60 to cover costs for the production’s musical score, costumes, and related expenses.

Perform in Turandot

This spring, choristers perform in the company’s debut of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot led by Chorus Director Michael Wittenburg.  On April 22, 2018, the opera begins at 3 p.m. at the Bergen Performing Arts Center, (bergenPAC) located at 30 North Van Brunt Street, in Englewood, New Jersey.

Preparation includes instruction in the pronunciation of the text in Italian, vocal warm-ups, learning the music and detailed staging. Notably, the Verismo Opera Chorus sings in Italian and performs live at the theatre.  Furthermore, the cast performs in costume under the direction of Stage Director Evelyn La Quaif in a fully staged production. Principal Conductor/Music Director Lucy Arner leads the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Orchestra.
