Based on Victor Hugo’s Le Roi s’amuse, one of the greatest dramas of modern times, Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto plays out between the seducer and frivolous Duke; Gilda, his innocent victim; and her father, Rigoletto, a powerful court jester. Monstrous and heartrending, grotesque and sublime, the title role reaches its height in the aria “Cortigiani”, descending from explosions of rage to piteous cries of mercy, confirming Verdi’s genius of adapting bel canto into thrilling theatrical realism.

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, the house opera company of the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), will present the fully staged production at the theatre, located at 30 North Van Brunt Street in Englewood, New Jersey.  Principal Conductor Lucy Arner returns to direct the Verismo Opera Orchestra. Chorus Director Michael Wittenburg joins the company to lead the Verismo Opera Chorus. Bass Richard Bernstein joins the company courtesy of the Metropolitan Opera as Sparafucile.  Verismo Opera welcomes Ballet Arts and Ballet Academy East and choreographer Kenny Larson in their debuts with the company.
